Wood Carvings


Wladyslaw (Walter) Marek was born in Lodygowice near Bielsko-Biala, Poland in 1944.

He started wood sculpture in his early teenage years. He specializes in poplar and lime-tree carving, full figures and reliefs. His preferred finish in natural wood or wood stain. Most of his work expresses polish folklore and sacral themes. He participated in many contests and exhibitions in Poland. The works of Mr. Marek can be found in many museums in Bielsko-Biala, Nowy Sacz, Torun and Vatican City.

In 1981 during one of his visits to San Antonio he produced The Way of the Cross for Our Lady of Chestochowa Shrine on Beethoven Street. In 1987 he also made and presented a model of a Panna Maria church to Pope John Paul II.

In 1994 Walter Marek permanently moved to San Antonio, Texas. He continues to carve the sacred statues.
