CowParade San
Antonio Overview
CowParade is the world's largest
and premier public art event. From Chicago and New York in 1999 and 2000, Kansas
City and Houston in 2001, and Las Vegas, London, Australia and San Antonio in
2002, CowParade continues to evolve, not just in size, but also in quality and
creativity.
What exactly is CowParade?
CowParade is a public art exhibition that places life size fiberglass cows
designed and created by host city artists in city landscapes for the public to
view and interact with. While the base cow sculptures remain the same, each
city's artists are challenged by the creations from the past events, inspired by
the cultural influences and history of their cities, and moved by their own
interpretation of the cow as an object of art. CowParade is funded through
individual and corporate sponsorships that allow a broad cross-section of the
host city to contribute. Through these sponsorships, increased tourism, and
CowParade merchandise sales CowParade has raised hundreds of millions of dollars
for charities, and city governments all over the world.
"CowParade is the single
largest and most successful event in the history of Chicago"
- Chicago Mayor Richard Daley
Most important, CowParade
ultimately benefits charity. At the conclusion of each event, the cows are
herded up and many are auctioned, with a substantial portion of the proceeds
benefiting charity.
San Antonio is a
unique and ideal host city for the CowParade event because of our local culture,
artistic resources, and distinct history and architecture. We are pleased to
announce the CowParade San Antonio Honarary co-chairs; The Honarable Mayor Ed
Garza, City Manager Terry Brechtel, and Pediatric Oncologist Dr. Mahendra Patel.
In San Antonio, the charitable beneficiaries will be the American Cancer Society
San Antonio office and the San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs (focusing on
funding for San Antonio based non-profit arts organizations).
